Symptoms of Constipation

Common symptoms of constipation include:

Infrequent Bowel Movements: Having fewer than three bowel movements per week.

Hard or Lumpy Stools: Stools that are hard, lumpy, and may be painful to pass.

Straining: One can experience hard straining or pushing for passage of stool or during a bowel movement.

Feeling of Incomplete Evacuation: This is a feeling as though you have not completely evacuated.

Abdominal Discomfort: The abdomen may be bloated, painful, or crampy, too.

Causes of Constipation

Several factors can cause constipation, including:

Low Fiber Diet: A diet which contains not enough fruits, vegetables, or whole grains can make passage of stool harder.

Physical Inactivity: Generally, inactivity or prolonged sitting can delay digestion.

Dehydration: Inadequate intake of water can result in hard, dry stools.

Ignore the urge: Sometimes, when the urge to go to the bathroom is ignored, it can lead to constipation problems over time.

Medical Conditions: Other conditions that can cause constipation include irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, or problems with the thyroid.

Treatment for Constipation

Treating constipation often involves simple lifestyle changes:

High fibre intake can help soften the stools and make them easy to pass; this will be achieved by increasing the intake of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains foods.

Hydrate your body: It is always important during the day to drink enough water to help soften the stools.

Exercise daily: Exercise will help in keeping your digestive system moving.

Don’t Ignore the Urge: Go to the bathroom as soon as you feel the need.

These changes can often relieve constipation and help prevent it from happening again.
