What is GI Bleed in Adults?

Gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding in adults refers to bleeding that occurs anywhere in the digestive tract, which includes the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine (colon), rectum, and anus. This type of bleeding can range from mild to severe and may be caused by various factors.

Diagnosis typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests such as blood tests, endoscopy, colonoscopy, or imaging studies like CT scans or angiography.

Some causes of this disease are Peptic Ulcers, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Colorectal Polyps or Cancer, Hemorrhoids, etc.

Treatment for GI bleeding depends on the underlying cause and severity of the bleeding. It may include medications to reduce stomach acid, antibiotics for infections, endoscopic procedures to stop bleeding, or surgery in more severe cases. Fast medical attention is important to diagnose and treat GI bleeding effectively.

Signs of GI Bleed in Adults

Gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding in adults can show various signs, indicating bleeding somewhere along the digestive tract.

  • One common sign is vomiting blood, which might appear red or like coffee grounds.
  • Another sign is passing black, tarry stools, which indicates that the blood has been partially digested in the stomach.
  • In some cases, fresh blood may be visible in the stool, making it appear bright red.

Other symptoms of GI bleeding can include

  • Feeling lightheaded.
  • Weakness.
  • Dizziness happens because the body is losing blood, leading to a drop in blood pressure. In severe cases, individuals may even faint due to significant blood loss.

It’s important to note that not everyone with GI bleeding will experience all of these signs, and some people may have additional symptoms depending on the underlying cause and their overall health condition.

If you or someone you know experiences any signs of GI bleeding, it’s important to seek medical attention promptly.
