What is Endoscopic Ultrasound?

It’s commonly used for diagnostic purposes, particularly in the evaluation of the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, and surrounding structures.

An endoscopic ultrasound may cause some discomfort, but it’s not typically described as very painful. The use of sedation and local anesthesia, along with the skill of the medical team, help make the procedure as comfortable as possible.

Is an Endoscopic Ultrasound Painful?

• Sedation: Before the procedure, you are usually given sedation, which helps you relax and may make you drowsy. This is a crucial aspect of minimizing any potential pain or discomfort during the EUS.
• Anesthesia: The doctor will also use local anesthesia to numb the area where the endoscope is inserted.
• During the EUS, the endoscope is carefully inserted through the mouth and into the esophagus and stomach. Then, it’s advanced to the area of interest. While this may cause some discomfort, it shouldn’t be very painful due to the anesthesia and sedation.
• Aftereffects: After the procedure, you might experience a sore throat or mild discomfort in the throat or upper abdomen, but this is temporary and should subside within a day or so.
