What Is a Peptic Ulcer?

Stomach ulcers are also referred to as peptic ulcers, whereby they are open sores that develop on the inner stomach lining. Such ulcers are caused most probably by certain infections with a bacterium known as Helicobacter pylori or long-term use of NSAIDs, such as aspirin and ibuprofen. Stomach ulcers may lead to a variety of symptoms, including abdominal pain, bloating, and discomfort.

Can Ulcers Cause Gas?

Yes, stomach ulcers can cause gas. Damage to the stomach lining that occurs with a stomach ulcer might hamper the digestion process. This inability to digest well can result in the production of excess gas.

The gas thus produced may accumulate in their stomach and intestines, resulting in bloating, burping, and sometimes flatulence. Such individuals would generally feel more gassy or bloated after eating, especially upon the consumption of fatty or spicy foods.

Why Does Gas Occur with Stomach Ulcers?

A stomach ulcer can slow down the digestive process, as digestion doesn’t happen as usual. Untimely digestion can cause the fermenting of food inside the stomach or small intestine, leading to gas production.

Besides, if the ulcer was created by some form of infection by H. pylori, its by-product is an enzyme called urease, which helps break down urea in the stomach into ammonia and carbon dioxide, thus contributing to gas production.

Managing Gas Caused by Stomach Ulcers

If you think your gas is associated with a peptic ulcer, you need to consult a doctor. The ulcer itself should be treated with medicines that decrease stomach acid production, which will in turn relieve the gas.

Avoiding foods that cause gas helps, too. Stomach ulcers can cause gas formation as a result of disturbances that they create in the digestive process.

If you are experiencing gas, as well as other symptoms, including stomach pain or bloating, discuss these problems with your healthcare provider for correct diagnosis and treatment approaches.
